Match Thread: Colombia vs Canada

  • StandYourGroundhog👤18 hours ago

I’m happy to get the draw here against a generally better team

  • TellTaleTimes511 hours ago

This Colombia team has everything to win the World Cup. I think Yaser, and not Serna, made enough impact to get the World Cup birth nod.

  • clamdiggin1211 hours ago

Both teams can feel frustrated for not winning the match. Disallowed goal for Canada was marginally offside, and Colombia had a few really clear cut chances that they couldn’t put away.

Canada will probably be the happier team keeping a clean sheet against a highly ranked team. But some real lack of quality in the final third for both teams.

    • albyalbyson👤110 hours ago

Marginally offside means nothing. You’re either on or you’re not, and he was not on.

      • wishesandhopes👤110 hours ago

The goal scorer was on, as was the player who assisted him. It was a centimeter offside in the build up. I agree, it was offside and shouldn’t be counted, but if shaffelburg was a few cms back he still wins that header, and everything else was on, so the actual assist and goal were just as difficult as they’d have been had he been on.

        • onthelongrun110 hours ago

if anything, Schaffelburg was the man offside, right before passing the ball to David

          • CoolstorySteve19 hours ago

Did the ball come off the Colombian defender or was it Shaf that headed it to David?

  • Turbulent-Presence55👤711 hours ago

Davinson bacan , Lucimi bacan,Portilla bien.

Buen partido de Yaser y de Montero.

Lorenzo avispese con los cambios rápidos viejo .

    • elsapo2040👤1an hour ago

      Los dos equipos son pésimos.

    • TellTaleTimes411 hours ago

Neiser es bueno pero no have goles con equipos professionales por lo menos 5 goles necesita en brasil

  • omgshutupalready👤1611 hours ago

Need to put it together going forward more, but I’m very encouraged that we can pull off a heavy press against a team like Colombia and not get shredded at the back

  • football1078👤911 hours ago

We could have won this game by 23 goals. I’m not mad about it though.

Lorenzo clearly didn’t care about the scoreline but rather to try all these new guys out. Asprilla was pretty impressive overall, I might say.

Once the big names started coming out, you could see the shift in momentum clearly go towards Colombia. Okay game overall.

    • LesJawns610👤110 hours ago

You guys spanked Mexico so you’re happy about that, right?

      • football1078👤310 hours ago

Sure. Mexico is a much different team than Canada though.

  • inthezoneautozone12811 hours ago

Terrible game to watch but we gained lots of intel on players fighting for a spot in the World Cup squad. Yaser clearly has different quality compared to players like serna or campaz. Cucho threw away yet another opportunity. Roman is third choice and behind santi arias. Not the best game but much more useful than the cakewalk the Mexico game was.

  • sirsdoesnotsayalot👤-611 hours ago

Colombia so lost and Canada has such boring football this match was a travesty. I hope the Mexico v Ecuador game has some excitement at least.

    • football1078👤111 hours ago

It’s a friendly game for a reason. Colombia played with a bunch of ‘B’ and ‘C’ team players. Not to defend the performance, but yeah, it shows there’s a massive difference between our starting 11 and the rest of the guys.

  • Hasssun👤1111 hours ago

Much like the USA’s draw against Ecuador, Canada’s draw against Colombia is a nice result for them.

  • livinginthedoghouse👤411 hours ago

Very entertaining game, good result for Canada. The replays here in Canada looked like Canada’s goal was not offside.

    • jloome👤1011 hours ago

It was in the buildup. Our winger came back from an offside position about a boot heel too late.

    • bestyrs811 hours ago

It was close but I think it was the right call. Shaff was offside.

  • DungeonsAndDads👤1811 hours ago

What a horribly officiated match, both ways. Brutal.

    • gonzo_thegreat511 hours ago

      Yeah, not impressed either way.

  • fishhavenobones👤1211 hours ago

Shows the depth when Canada made subs the field started to tilt. Shaffelburg and Bassong, both making important mistakes late, but honestly well played game overall.

Canada could have had a penalty, and unlucky to be just a fraction offside on the David strike.

Colombia could have had a couple, with 2-3 close calls.

    • Turbulent-Presence55👤711 hours ago

That shaffelburg fella was pretty good ngl

      • fishhavenobones👤410 hours ago

He’s got good moments for sure. Huge upside especially going forward, but he got lost defensively today and was directly responsible for a big chance Columbia got off his turnover and missed mark.

  • MGM-Wonder1411 hours ago

    LDF is a baller

  • boomchicken1979🇨🇴111 hours ago

Get Rios and Roman off this fucking team. At least we know who we’re not taking to the WC

    • gonzo_thegreat811 hours ago

Don’t follow Colombia too closely, but glad (as a Canadian) Munoz was out for this game. He’s a real threat.

    • inthezoneautozone12511 hours ago

Rios on form is very good. He’s off of it but he starts for Benfica week in and week out. We just have to be patient that he gets out of his rut.

    • randomgamer305311 hours ago

If Borre is still getting call ups you’re crazy if you think Rios is not making the world cup squad. Has he been shit for a while for sure, but is Lorenzo.

      • boomchicken1979🇨🇴010 hours ago

Borre got called up cause Cordoba was like a 15 hour flight away. I just hope Castaño fully takes Rios playing time, he looked way better

        • albyalbyson👤210 hours ago

Can’t judge what happens 8 months from now from just these past two games. Yes, Castaño looked better these two games, but we have to see who is better in the moment when it actually matters. No doubt that both Rios and Castaño will be in the squad for June 26, unless except for injury, of course. Borre/Cordoba on the other hand are lucky that we currently lack a consistent no 9. I think it will depend on who is most in form with their club. I’m willing to bet it will be Luis Suarez, Cordoba, and Cucho/Borre. All 3 different profiles where Lorenzo can use tactically and adjust depending on opponents.

  • randomgamer3051211 hours ago

The only positive I take from this game is Yaser. He better make the final world cup team!

  • jamaicancovfefe1511 hours ago

Will gladly take a draw with Colombia

    • Turbulent-Presence55👤1011 hours ago

You Canuks showed that you are top dog in concacaf.  The team was very competitive and had a lot of guts , they didn’t stop their intensity once. Only at the end the game began to open to Colombia and even then we couldn’t beat you. Having lived in Montréal for a year I will always support you Tabernak (only making an exception when you play my country jeje)

      • Mysterious-Use-7028👤06 hours ago

They are the 3rd best team in North America

  • WeepingVagine👤1211 hours ago

How cruel are the soccer gods to bless us with Falcao but never let him play in a WC In his prime and then curse us with mediocrity at the CF position for the next 30 years

  • Shiruox911 hours ago

No foul but that was def a save, should’ve gotten a corner kick

    • fishhavenobones👤411 hours ago

      100%. That’s never a goal kick.

  • football1078👤511 hours ago

Yeah, we gotta work on that finishing man lmao

  • roguedevil🇨🇴1011 hours ago

Debatable foul, obvious save and the GK calls a goal kick. I’m most mad at Borre and Roman though. How did they not score.

  • randomgamer305911 hours ago

    Borre is so garbage!

  • Jokingly2179👤411 hours ago

    Roman LPM

  • Tony_car👤611 hours ago

Hope we see a full squad game between these two teams in the World Cup

  • randomgamer305411 hours ago

    Should’ve scored there

  • WeepingVagine👤511 hours ago

    Our forwards are so shit

  • football1078👤1011 hours ago

We had a couple of chances that we failed to capitalize on; Lucho’s and Yaser’s.

It’s just been such a stalemate so far besides that. Canada has a very well-conditioned squad and what they lack in football quality, they are making-up with athleticism, good pressing and overall defensive discipline.

    • onthelongrun29 hours ago

speaking of pressing, Colombia gave the Canadian forwards little time on the ball today

      • football1078👤18 hours ago

That’s true. But also, I just didnt see a lot of attacking ideas from the Canadians - the main threat they provoked were from set pieces and a long-range strike by Buchanan in the first half.

  • Tony_car👤1111 hours ago

WHERE IS THE COLOMBIAN YELLOW CARD

  • inthezoneautozone12611 hours ago

Who was worse today Roman or Rios. Very close.

    • Jokingly2179👤511 hours ago

If a Canadian goal was materialized through Roman then Roman, else Rios

  • Sheepshaman🇨🇴1111 hours ago

Not Ríos day for sure, very mediocre to shit game from him today

    • Jokingly2179👤311 hours ago

Know what? Scratch that. Roman had it point blank for the win. Holy shit.

  • senorcementtruck511 hours ago

Colombia had such beautiful kits before. Who decided on these abominations should be fired

  • Jazzlike_Athlete87961211 hours ago

Much as I wanted that goal to count, he’s offside.

  • roguedevil🇨🇴1211 hours ago

Good call from the AR. Tight, but likely off. Lack of VAR means we’ll never know for sure though.

    • Zharick_👤211 hours ago

Replay showed he was clearly off.

    • MGM-Wonder711 hours ago

Looked off on the replay. I was adamant he was onside…until I saw the replay lol

      • roguedevil🇨🇴911 hours ago

I thought he was miles off at first, but then the replay showed it was tighter than I thought lol. Interesting how our bias affects our first impression.

        • MGM-Wonder311 hours ago

          So true

  • Jokingly2179👤711 hours ago

Rios sub came 40 minutes too late imo

  • punkdrummer22611 hours ago

  • Snugboo311 hours ago

Canada could be the best team in Concacaf. They just need to win a Gold Cup or Nations League. They’re slightly better than Mexico and heads and shoulders above the abysmal Yanks.

    • Mysterious-Use-7028👤06 hours ago

The us beat Australia and Canada couldn’t. I don’t think the us is worse than Canada or Mexico.

    • quantumtheorem👤011 hours ago

Had a full team in Gold Cup and lost lol. USA fielded a B team squad and got farther. You guys aren’t good as you think

      • LesJawns610👤110 hours ago

I’m not Canadian. I’m just an American who’s anti-US after Trump won.

        • Mysterious-Use-7028👤06 hours ago

Then you are pathetic. This has nothing to do with politics. Grow up and stop being so insufferable.

  • roguedevil🇨🇴2512 hours ago

It’s crazy how much better this Canada team is to Mexico. Mexico looked physically unable to do anything, no press, no duels, and no pace. Canada is the exact opposite and it really shows how bad we are at breaking a team down.

    • football1078👤211 hours ago

I disagree with your last statement. We were playing with subs for most of the match. First half was pretty bad, but the second half showed that there’s a big difference between our first team and our “B” team.

      • roguedevil🇨🇴211 hours ago

Outside of CF, we have a pretty well defined starting 11 and the quality nosedives quickly afterwards. Any injury or lack of form to any starters players and we are clueless. In these friendlies, you want to see players like Cucho, Serna, Castaño, Campaz, and Portilla give everything for the shirt. I have faith in the starters, but I don’t want to rely on James too much. I want Lorenzo to use Yaser a bit more from the start, but I understand Yaser also has to earn that spot at club level.

        • football1078👤111 hours ago

I agree. I’ve been wondering for a couple of years now how we will fare once James is gone. We rely too much on him and our overall quality tends to drop a lot when he is not on the field.

We got some good talented players but we need to start adapting them to a system that doesn’t rely on a static “10” for our attacking needs. With that being said, once some of our big names began associating in the final third, we really started to breakdown Canada’s block. We got the quality, it’s just that we need to learn how to play without James.

    • jimmytimmy23456👤911 hours ago

Honestly it is just a different profile. Canada’s team is super athletic and can press the hell out of you. We also have some quality now whereas a few years ago our starting 11 was still mostly MLS guys.

Mexico doesn’t have a lot of speed and for absolutely cooked in translation by Colombian wingers.

The best way to beat Canada is just to let us have the ball. We lack creativity and we play better in games where we have 35-40% possession than 60+%

      • football1078👤611 hours ago

Yeah, I agree. Canada is a very well-conditioned team. Good defensive discipline as well. Not a lot of football but the athleticism makes up for a number of deficiencies, especially on the counter and defending.

Colombia began taking over once the big names began to associate up front. Lorenzo took a while to introduce some of the heavyweights, but that’s okay since we mainly used this game to give the younger/newer guys some minutes. I think you add 10 more mins to that game and the scoreline would’ve been 2-0 Colombia.

    • omgshutupalready👤511 hours ago

We finally have a decent talent pool that’s playing at an alright level, some at a very high one. But we’re not miles off of Mexico or the US in terms of talent. It’s more that these players have been playing together for about 6 years now and know each other very well, combined with finally finding a system of heavy press that really suits our strengths. The gap in technical skill between Colombian players and Canadian players is clear, we are just very athletic and organised tactically, which I think can give us an outside shot at anyone with some luck, even with that mismatched talent

    • inthezoneautozone12511 hours ago

I thought Mexico pressed somewhat well. We gave the ball away a lot due to pressure. However they offered no threat going forward and their defense was abysmal.

      • roguedevil🇨🇴411 hours ago

We gave the ball away because Ditta and Angulo aren’t good on the ball. They also didn’t press the midfield, just the backline and left a huge gap for James to move forward.

    • MGM-Wonder1111 hours ago

Were missing 34 of our starting backline right now too. Been pleasantly surprised with how connected they’ve looked.

    • TellTaleTimes-511 hours ago

They’re just fouling. No different than Paraguay.

      • roguedevil🇨🇴911 hours ago

They are still getting first to every ball and defending aerial duels much better. We have to learn to play all styles instead of coming up with excuses.

        • TellTaleTimes111 hours ago

What’s the excuse? We play against this kind of soccer when playing Uruguay or Paraguay. Physically, inconsistent, ugly. We didn’t lose, they were never threatening offensively. You’re complaining to complain.

          • roguedevil🇨🇴111 hours ago

I want to see the team improve and be threatening even without James. If we can’t play balls into space and trust our forwards to get there, then they need to be up for battle and hold it with their backs to goals. Today, they did neither.

            • TellTaleTimes111 hours ago

They’ve done both in the three previous games. This friendly was to test out fringe players (Portillo, Cucho, Yaser, Serna, Roman, Campaz), it wasn’t as full strength as Mexico. Canada did a good job at disrupting play. It’s like when Real Madrid plays a scrappy team that earns a 0-0 draw, a scrappy game. No need to be too critical of the coach and team, it’s a friendly after all.

              • roguedevil🇨🇴211 hours ago

My initial comment wasn’t even critical of Colombia, but praising Canada.

I just don’t think you can throw out a subpar performance just because “they fouled a lot”. You have to learn from every match, and we learned some of those players you listed are not good enough for the shirt.

    • LesJawns610👤1011 hours ago

Canada is probably the most improved country w/ a sizeable population. They’re closing the gap on Mexico and have already surpassed the US a long time ago.

      • Mysterious-Use-7028👤05 hours ago

They aren’t close to the us or Mexico

      • Ok-Age-2657👤-111 hours ago

While I agree we have made strides and bounds let’s not kid ourselves if more of the US gave a shit about football they would be consistently making top 4 internationally and running both Mexico and Canada in CONCACAF matches…

  • Significant-Mango203👤412 hours ago

Bruh you beat Mexico 4-0 and can’t even get more than one shot on target against Canada?!?

    • TheCrazyBean🇨🇴37 hours ago

I mean, for this game Colombia started their:

      3rd choice keeper

      3rd choice right wingback

      3rd choice center middifielder

2nd choice center midfielder who was replaced by the 2nd choice right winger

      3rd choice attacking midfielder

4th choice forward who then was replaced by a no-choice forward.

Add Rios having his worst game for the NT ever for some reason (guess better here than in the world cup)

      Then

Diaz was replaced by the 3rd (possible 2nd?) choice winger.

The only first choice starters were the 2 centre backs, the left wingback, and Diaz.

Of course this game wouldn’t be as good as Mexico’s with the team making so many experiments.

    • Zharick_👤511 hours ago

If you watched both games you’d tell Lorenzo was heavily experimenting this game.

    • football1078👤611 hours ago

Mexico is ass, just wanna start with that. And yeah, we are playing with a very different squad.

    • Jokingly2179👤911 hours ago

      Way different squad

      • Jazzlike_Athlete8796311 hours ago

        Also, way different motivation.

Mexico still thinks it is hot shit so friendlies don’t feel as important to them.

Canada still feels like it has a lot to prove and is playing like it.

  • LesJawns610👤812 hours ago

Canada have been so much better than Mexico when they played Colombia. I can see Canada getting a point, or not losing badly like 4-0. haha

      • football1078👤112 hours ago

Lorenzo is trying out all kinds of weird stuff this game. It’s interesting cause whilst Canada doesn’t really present much of a threat in the attack, they’ve been able to outpace and shut down a decent amount of our passing game. It’s been a stalemate so far.

        • RyanJay92👤111 hours ago

Typical Quintero trickery. Did the same vs Japan in the 2018 WC and scored.

  • jimmytimmy23456👤712 hours ago

23 combined fouls and 1 combined shot in the first half is a hilarious statline

  • randomgamer305312 hours ago

What a letdown from Cucho after finally getting his start for the national team. I guess part of that is this dysfunctional midfield, especially Rios who forgot how to even play football. As for Campaz, even a brick will bounce off his feet

    • football1078👤212 hours ago

Tbf, there’s not been a lot for him to do. Now that James is in, we’ll see if we can get more balls up there to the final third.

Bad game from Rios. Lucky we didn’t concede from that challenge he went down too easily.

I don’t think Nestor Lorenzo did his match preparation for this one. Very weird formation and squad. Jesse Marsch team is gonna pack the middle, press, and be physical.

The team he selected are not good enough passers to get out of the midfield block.

    • Jokingly2179👤412 hours ago

Experimenting is fine but that midfield is atrocious. Lucho is no captain and he’s also had to go to midfield a lot

  • football1078👤512 hours ago

Canada has a very athletic game but they provide next to nothing when in possession of the ball.

Colombia does well in the build-up, but can’t get it to connect in the last third. Getting outpaced when they’re on the attack.

Boring first 45’. I think 23 fouls so far?

  • Aird25512 hours ago

No clue how Colombia are escaping cards

    • Jokingly2179👤512 hours ago

We have a lot of practice at that, sadly. Canada is not at CONMEBOL levels of shithousing

      • daze4791112 hours ago

100% agree. CONMEBOL games often play out like this.

  • Zharick_👤212 hours ago

What canada lacks in skill they make up in speed, damn. Did y’all bring 11 track stars to play?

    • tfcred512 hours ago

Both of our fastest players are hurt too lol. Davies and Bombito.

  • Shiruox712 hours ago

    Absolutely horrendous refereeing so far

    • Shiruox212 hours ago

  • randomgamer305712 hours ago

Did the ref only give 1min of the 3 lol

    • Gaporigo312 hours ago

Nah, whoever is doing the graphics messed up and restarted the timer or something.

  • bagh0lder10312 hours ago

    Coma inducing match

  • boomchicken1979🇨🇴312 hours ago

Get Rios and cucho off this fucking field

    • Jokingly2179👤812 hours ago

Yeah sit Rios the fuck down. Cucho I’m on the fence cause not much he can do if the ball gets lost in the kerfuffle in the middle of the pitch

  • randomgamer305112 hours ago

Something better will happen early in the second half otherwise I’m not staying until almost 11 for this game

  • RiverCartwright512 hours ago

Slide tackle from behind. Clips the heel on the player breaking away, no yellow.

    • Jokingly2179👤112 hours ago

Punted the ball. Didn’t touch the player. It’s as clean as it gets in that scenario lol

      • ColorlessChesspiece👤612 hours ago

If he calls it as a foul, he has to make it a yellow, though.

This guy’s yellow card judging has been all over the place.

        • Jokingly2179👤312 hours ago

Ah yeah, fair enough. It was not foul but if the ref thought it was then that only leaves the ankle kick as an option which would be a yellow.

          Terrible ref all around

  • martinez2828🇨🇴-112 hours ago

Hahaha doesn’t even touch him and they call a foul

  • Jokingly2179👤512 hours ago

Ref was good for a solid 15 minutes. After Richard dove it went off the rails. What shit game holy crap.

  • WeepingVagine👤112 hours ago

    All ball

  • martinez2828🇨🇴-912 hours ago

lol all they know how to do is foul

    • mouth_spiders412 hours ago

Sorry bud, we’re still learning how to play sports other than beer league hockey

  • football1078👤-712 hours ago

Canada is playing like they’re in the World Cup final. Maybe ease off on the fouling a bit? It’s a friendly geez

    • Jokingly2179👤312 hours ago

Why does it matter it’s a friendly? You go out to play. If Colombia went to sleep doesn’t mean Canada can’t give its all

      • football1078👤-712 hours ago

Is that Canada’s all? Because I’m not impressed in the slightest

    • tfcred812 hours ago

These are the only competitive games we have until the wc. Have to treat it like one.

      • football1078👤312 hours ago

        Fair enough.

  • WeepingVagine👤-212 hours ago

    Canada think its hockey

  • martinez2828🇨🇴-612 hours ago

Jesus Canada came to kill and injure

Bruv, they’ve been fouling like crazy. Theres only been a couple of blatant dives. Wtf are you on about

      • martinez2828🇨🇴012 hours ago

That’s cause it’s a friendly and they weren’t expecting Canada to come in to kill on every single ball 😂

    • Available_Gap2040👤-112 hours ago

      deadass

  • Obvious-Cake-4861👤912 hours ago

This referee is so trash. Colombia could have had 3 yellows by now
